In a letter to Mr John Mathews, proprietor of the Dundalk Examiner, he says '... on this day my father and I dug up the stone, which was sunk on one side about two feet beneath the surface. The stone is broken into three pieces. We raised the stone to the top of the surface after a good deal of labour. The inscription is rather difficult to make out owing to the length of time it is beneath the surface. So far as I can ascertain it I send it to you. There is some of the inscription obliterated so much that it is impossible to make it out—the year that Reilly died and the word Hoey.' This stone, which lay at the northwest corner of the church, marks the grave of John Hoey who was hanged in 1798. We could find no trace of it.)
